What you get

Measure volume, surface area, and real-world size

The Text3D.ai 3D model volume calculator turns a raw mesh file into practical numbers you can act on before printing, listing, quoting, or sharing a model — every value is computed from the actual geometry.

Model Volume

The solid 3D volume of the mesh after scaling to your target height — exact for watertight models, flagged as an estimate otherwise.

Surface Area

Total mesh surface area, useful for resin coating, painting, electroplating, finishing, and technical documentation.

Bounding Box Dimensions

Width, depth, and height at your chosen size, so you can check printer-bed fit, product scale, or scene placement.

Material Estimate

100% solid volume plus a basic 20% infill estimate and fill ratio, to help plan filament, resin, or quoting before you print.

3 steps

How the 3D volume calculator works

A simple, private workflow for STL, GLB, OBJ, 3MF, glTF, and PLY assets — the mesh is read and measured directly in your browser.

1

Upload or choose a model

Drag in a 3D file or upload one from your device — or pick one of your own 3D assets from your Text3D.ai creations.

2

Set unit and target height

Pick cm, mm, or inches, then enter the final height you want. The mesh is scaled uniformly to that height before any measurement is calculated.

3

Get measurements & report

See volume, surface area, scaled width/depth/height, bounding box volume, fill ratio, and material estimates — then download a styled HTML report.

Accuracy you can trust

Built around watertight, manifold meshes

Volume is only meaningful when a mesh actually encloses a solid. Text3D.ai inspects every shared edge and reports whether the model is likely watertight, has open edges, or is non-manifold — so you always know how much to trust the number.

  • Exact signed-volume math computed from the real triangle mesh.
  • Edge analysis detects holes and non-manifold geometry automatically.
  • Open meshes still return a measurement, clearly marked as an estimate.
  • No fabricated numbers — if a file can't be read, the tool says so.
Supported formats

One calculator for every common 3D format

Each format is parsed natively in the browser, so the volume and surface area come from the real mesh — whether it is a printable STL, a textured GLB, or a packaged 3MF.

STL3D print

The standard 3D printing format. Both binary and ASCII STL are read triangle-by-triangle for an exact volume and surface area.

GLBWeb · games

Binary glTF for web and game engines. The calculator decodes mesh accessors and measures the combined geometry.

OBJModeling

A widely used text mesh format. Vertices and faces (including polygons) are triangulated and measured directly.

3MFPrint package

The modern 3D printing package. Upload a .3mf directly, or drop a .zip and the model is auto-extracted and measured in your browser. For the most accurate volume, export a single watertight solid with no compression.

glTFOpen standard

JSON-based glTF with embedded base64 buffers is parsed the same way as GLB to extract triangle geometry.

PLYScans

ASCII PLY point and mesh data, common for 3D scans, is read to compute surface area and volume.

FAQ

3D model volume calculator FAQ

Answers about STL volume, GLB and OBJ volume, surface area, watertight meshes, privacy, and 3D print material estimates.

What is a 3D model volume calculator?

A 3D model volume calculator reads the triangles in a mesh file and computes the enclosed volume, total surface area, and bounding box dimensions after scaling the model to a real target height. Text3D.ai does this entirely in your browser for STL, GLB, OBJ, 3MF, glTF, and PLY files.

Is the 3D model volume calculator free?

Yes — the Text3D.ai 3D model volume calculator is permanently free. Free users can run up to 2 volume calculations per day and download 2 measurement reports per day for STL, GLB, OBJ, 3MF, glTF, and PLY models. Need more? A Text3D.ai subscription removes all limits, giving you unlimited 3D model volume, surface area, and dimension calculations plus unlimited report downloads.

How do I calculate STL volume online?

Upload a binary or ASCII STL file, choose cm, mm, or inches, enter the final height, and click Calculate Volume. The tool returns the scaled volume, surface area, width, depth, height, bounding box volume, fill ratio, and a basic 3D printing material estimate.

Can I calculate GLB, OBJ, glTF, PLY, or 3MF volume?

Yes. The calculator reads triangle geometry from GLB, glTF, OBJ, PLY, and 3MF files in addition to STL. For 3MF it unpacks the model archive in the browser and reads the mesh directly, so the volume is computed from the real geometry rather than estimated from file size.

Why do I need to enter a target height?

Many 3D files do not carry reliable real-world units. Entering a target height tells the calculator how tall the finished model should be, and every other measurement — width, depth, surface area, and volume — is scaled consistently from that height.

What is a watertight model and why does it matter?

A watertight (manifold) model is fully closed, with every mesh edge shared by exactly two triangles, so the shape encloses a solid volume. The tool checks edges and reports Likely watertight, Open edges detected, or Non-manifold edges detected. Open or non-manifold meshes can make the computed volume less reliable, so it is shown as an estimate.

How does the mesh check work?

When the browser can read triangle faces, Text3D.ai counts how many triangles share each edge. An edge used by exactly two triangles is closed; edges used once indicate holes (open edges), and edges used three or more times indicate non-manifold geometry. The result is summarized in the Mesh Check field and the accuracy badge.

Can I use this as a 3D print material estimate?

Yes, for planning. The tool shows the 100% solid volume and a basic 20% infill estimate. Real filament or resin usage will differ because slicer settings, wall and shell thickness, top and bottom layers, supports, and printer calibration all change the final amount.

Does it calculate surface area and dimensions too?

Yes. Along with volume, the calculator reports total surface area and the scaled width, depth, and height, so you can plan coating and finishing or check whether a model fits your printer bed or product scene.

Are my 3D files uploaded to a server?

Text3D.ai does not retain or publish any 3D asset you upload. The 3D model volume calculator processes your STL, GLB, OBJ, 3MF, glTF, or PLY file only to compute volume, surface area, and dimensions and to generate your report — and once that is done, the loaded model is immediately cleared and any record is deleted. We never share or expose your designs, so you can measure proprietary parts, product prototypes, and AI-generated 3D models with confidence.

How accurate are the results?

Surface area and dimensions are computed directly from the mesh and match the geometry provided. Volume is exact for watertight meshes and is treated as an estimate for open or non-manifold meshes. Material estimates are approximate and intended for planning only.

Can I download the calculation as a report?

Yes. After a calculation completes you can download a self-contained, styled HTML report that includes the model details, every measurement, and the accuracy note — ready to save, print, or share.
